Known as the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean, the beautiful island of Montserrat is a lush, inviting getaway situated in the eastern Caribbean. Volcanic activity is responsible for much of the greenery. This pear-shaped island is about 30 miles southwest of Antigua, which is the nearest airport. A new airport is currently under construction and should be operational sometime this year. Montserrat is mountainous, and the highest peak is a dramatic 3,000 feet in the Soufriere Hills. Nevis and St. Kitts, Guadeloupe and Antigua are neighboring islands and can all be spotted from various points on Montserrat.
The weather is constantly pleasant all year round: temperatures hover around the 76 to 88F mark and the mountains and the sea ensure plenty of cool breezes everyday. So you need casual, lightweight clothing with a few light sweaters for the late evenings or winter months.
Montserrat offers plenty of lovely, secluded beaches where you can truly get away from it all as you will find no crowds here. The sands on all the beaches except for one, are a dramatic glistening black; this phenomenon is a result of all the volcanic activity on the island. The diving and other water sports like kayaking, sports fishing or even boat rides will give you hours of pleasure while you enjoy the beautiful clear waters. In fact, taking a relaxed boat ride to view the Maritime Exclusion Zone and the devastated village of Plymouth is the best way to spend a delightful afternoon.
You can also easily spend a day exploring nearby islands; for instance, Antigua is a mere hour away by ferry. Take in some sightseeing and shopping before you return to the peace and quiet of Montserrat. This way you will have the best of both worlds! Montserrat offers a variety of interesting and unique trails in its mountains that give you the chance to observe the ecology of the island up close. You can choose the pace of your hike, whether you want it relaxed or challenging. Be sure to check up on the events and activities on the island before you visit, as Montserrat has plenty of these in store for the visitor all year round.
